Sex offenders within the military are to registered on a dedicated database. Recent legislation passed by the House of Representatives places responsibility on The Dept. Of Defense. The sex offenders registry database will not be available publicly but only to law enforcement officers and the FBI.
The measure was added to The National Defense Authorization Act which funds the military. Capitol Hill saw a press conference in February. The press conference showed images of those sex offenders which had escaped registration. It was revealed that hundreds of military sex offenders had managed to stay beneath the radar once released from military prison. It is hoped that the senate will put forward similar provisions in the defense bill.
Different solutions had already pre empted proposed measures inclusive additions to the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act. The act required the Department of Defense register sex offenders on an FBI database. This also provided a comprehensive solution to alert both the public and law enforcement over the future release from military prison of sex offenders.
However the legislation continues to rely on sex offenders to register themselves when leaving military prison. The names on any sex offenders registry are not initially made public it does place the onus on The Department of Defense to make available information should they fail to register themselves. However it is unclear as as to how long the Department of defense should wait.
However The House bill requires The Department of Defense to track sex offenders working in military installations who are employed directly. Photographs of military sex offenders would also be required to be kept on file.
